dutch website

Welcome to the Pieterburen Tegengas website
Thank you for taking an interest in our campaign AGAINST the plans to build a large-scale gas storage installation in Pieterburen, the Netherlands. Many people agree with us when we say: KEEP YOUR HANDS OFF PIETERBUREN!

We are against EDF's (Electricité de France) disastrous plans to spoil our beautiful village, which lies in the rural 'Hoogeland' region, by building an industrial complex. The complex has been planned on a piece of land to the south of Pieterburen, and is barely outside the village.

EDF's plan lacks some elementary components. For instance, they are unable to tell us who their customers are going to be and how the gas is going to be transported to and from the site. We find this very suspicious and are bearing the possibility in mind that there may be secret plans to build a nuclear waste dumping ground in Pieterburen.

We are AGAINST this! We are fighting to preserve our unspoiled countryside, with its beautiful villages, fields and dikes, as well as the peace and tranquility that is still to be experienced here.

We are against the proposed gas storage installation in Pieterburen
Action group Pieterburen Tegengas is AGAINST EDF's plans to build an underground gas storage facility in Pieterburen, because:
  • it will damage the open landscape that is unique to the province of Groningen
  • the installation, unsuitable in such an environment, will cause light, noise and sight pollution
  • such activities are expected to cause ground tremors and subsidence
  • it may have adverse effects on the delicate (natural)environment
  • it will have negative effects on tourism in the village and the surrounding area
  • there is no need for such a storage installation in Pieterburen; there are plenty of alternative locations.
The attempts EDF have undertaken to provide us with information about their plans, however, have not removed our worries, but on the contrary, reinforced them.

The images above give an impression of our beautiful open landscape and the kind of ugly industrial complex that EDF is planning to build here.

EDF have not shown any consideration for our values: They do not respect the rural charm of the area, the silence and tranquillity and our sustainable ideas. What's more, they are planning activities which will bring enormous environmental damage. Will you support our protest against these plans? Please sign this petition against gas storage in Pieterburen.

  Recent developments
  • The action group has presented EDF with a letter demanding to stop the project and to withdraw its permit application. The project has no support among the population and EDF and her PR-company Weber Shandwick's recent inadequate communication methods have not inspired any confidence. (Oct 29th, 2010)
  • EDF postpones its plans for the build of a gas storage installation by ten months. EDF expects it will take more time to settle possible objections lodged against the building of a test-drill installation. These test-drills were planned to start in February 2011. In the new schedule, these will take place at the end of 2011. (Oct 29th, 2010)
  • The action group is delighted that EDF has decided to delay the test-drilling. It shows that EDF thought far too lightly about the project and underestimated the resistance to it. Our resistance will ensure, among other things, that getting the necessary permits will be heavily delayed, if they are granted at all. Protesting works! (Oct 29th, 2010)
